Taming the west

Most of you are aware that we live on a “hobby” farm and have a few bovines. Due to other areas of focus, we usually only pay attention to them at birth, death or escape, and usually wish for an early death for a few of them when they do escape! Anyway, we have been taking quite a bit of time this year trying to get the herd in better shape so we can produce a regular supply of grass fed beef for our family and a few others who recognize the great benefits of this type of beef. As the summer has come on strong, we have been regularly moving the herd between pastures and have now been putting them on full rations of Alfalfa and meadow grass hay due to the dry summer months. This has led us to be much more involved with them and feeding time has helped them become much more tame (except for when you are driving in with the food and you feel like you are about to be stampeded!). After they start eating, all of the kids like to hop out and see how many of the cows will let them pet them. Faint of heart, do not apply!

We are bringing in a new bull at the end of the month so that should add another element of excitement as well!
